Description
This is a 120 year oldantique Japanese
kakesuzuri
(portable document chest) from the late Meiji
Era (c. 1900). This
kakesuzuri
tansu has
two large drawers within a swing open door. Made of
solid
sugi
(cryptomeria) inside and out with original
kijiro
(natural lacquer) over a persimmon tannin stain. All the metal hardware is hand forged coppper.
Kakesuzuri were used as portable accounting chests (the forerunner of the attache case). Also known as a calligraphy chest as it housed an ink stone, brushes, ink stick, and paper. This chest still has its original kijiro (natural lacquer) hand rubbed finish over persimmon tannin stain. Made with wooden pin
lap joint construction (see last picture). The lower interior drawer has an operable lock with key (see picture 9). The front door has a slide on the door latch which can hold the door closed when the "button" is pushed to the right (see picture 10).
The method of construction as well as all the forged copper work on this chest dates it to the late Meiji Era (c. 1900) or even earlier. This chest was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials, as well as, money and valuables. The top handle is still very secure (see picture 3) and provides a convenient way to transport this chest. All drawers open and close smoothly. The double hinged lidded top swings open and closes easily.
Both drawers open and close smoothly. Along with a century old warm patina this chest remains in
fine
original antique
condition.
This
tansu
chest measures 9 1/2" wide by 10'' tall by 13" deep (24 x 25 x 33 cm). A very warm accent for your home or office. Great to hold pens, as well as, remote controls for the TV and stereo. Please enjoy the enlarged pictures to get a full appreciation of the fine old original finish and patina.
