    Description

Here is a charming, antique sauce tureen and matching underplate from John Rose Coalport - all 3 pieces transfer printed and painted in colors with the Indian Tree pattern, and all handles and feet enhanced by exquisite gilding. Brown edge rims; slot for ladle. Length of underplate is 8 7/8"; length of bowl, handle to handle, is 7 1/4"; height of bowl with lid is 6 1/8". Unsigned, except for workman's mark (not unusual for early Coalport). This set is in remarkable condition - no chips, 'nicks', stains, crazing or repairs - just that the underplate has 4 worn spots to the design, a result of the 4 feet resting atop it for 200 years (see photo 8). Also, from manufacture, there is a 1/2" firing crack to inside bowl (see photo 11; not visible from outside). Beautiful! As a note: In circa 1802, Coalport was the first European company to produce the Indian Tree pattern, which is actually after a circa 1725-35 Chinese design, not one from India. Since then, just about every major English manufacturer has produced their own version, including Spode, Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Copeland, etc., and it continues to be produced today. I am pleased to offer for sale such an early example of this iconic design.
