Description:
This is an excellent quality incense container (a.k.a. Kogo in Japanese).
It was originally made to be used at Sado (茶道 = tea ceremony) or Kodo (香道 = traditional incense-smelling ceremony) in Japan.
Of course, you can use it in any ways with your creative idea.
It was made by a popular artisan Chikuyoshi Chikushiro (筑城 筑良). He was born in 1951 and works in Yamanaka, which is a mecca of Japanese lacquerware.
The theme (or design) of this incense container is "Katawaguruma (片輪車 in Japanese)", which means "Cart Wheels in Stream". This design has been loved in Sado and Kodo as well as in Kimono from ancient time.
The base material of this kogo is made of Washi (和紙 = traditional Japanese paper) as opposed to wood. It is more difficult to make, light and robust (and valuable) than those made of wood. Its
technique
is called "Ikkan-Bari (一閑張 in Japanese)".
