    Description

    Authentic Native American
    Acoma Made
    6" Seed Pot
    Hand-Coiled and Hand Decorated
    Artisan:
    Alicia Chino
    Process:
Crafted and accented with natural materials, this hand-coiled pottery is made using thin coils of clay piled one on top of the other, each being “finger pressed” into the coil below it. Most Native American pottery is made from clay which is locally dug by the potters. The pottery is generally open-pit fired or fired in self-consuming kilns, and, if from Santa Clara Pueblo in particular, fired many times to achieve the black layer on the underlying red clay. Air temperature, firing method, and wind among other variables all have a part in the success or failure of the firing process. Coiled, fired and cooled pots are then hand finished by the artist with etching or painting.
    Description:
Wonderful hand-coiled and hand-painted seed pot by Acoma potter Alicia Chino.
In the fall the women would take the seeds for next Spring and place them in these pots and then stack them. These pots would be placed in the corner of their home, stacked so the bottom of one pot would seal the top of the other. This storage technique would save space and keep the seeds secure for next years' seed crop

    Interpretation:
