Description
This is a parfleche case made by Archie Lawyer, of the Nez Perce Tribe. Mr. Lawyer, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 97, was a descendant of Chief Lawyer, who signed two peace treaties with the US government on behalf of the Nez Perce. The case was purchased at an estate sale in Central Florida. Inside it was a note that reads: "8-11-02 Nez Perce His name is Archie Lawyer He is a decendant (sic) of Chief Lawyer who signed both the 1855 and 1862 piece (sic) treaties Archie is 90 yrs old 2002 Ni Mii Puu"
Mr. Lawyer was a prominent member of the Nez Perce tribe, and extremely proud of his heritage. He was an athlete, a WWII veteran, a coach, and an instructor at a community college. Later in life he became interested in traditional Native American leathercraft. His work is mentioned in the book "A Song To The Creator."
Although it's in very good condition, with strong colors, the leather case is somewhat stiff, so I haven't unfolded it. Folded, it measures 6" X 3."
PLEASE NOTE: This is not the Archie Lawyer who was a Presbyterian minister in Idaho in the 1890s. It is one of his descendants, with the same name.
