    Description

Outstanding vintage Native American Catlinite / Pipestone disk chanunpa ceremonial or "peace" pipe by George "Standing Eagle" Bryan 1910-1985 (Ojibwa/Chippewa White Earth Reservation).  George and his wife Clara "Winona" were long associated with the Pipestone National Monument in MN and were employed there for many decades.  They worked their Spotted Quarry in Pipestone and Clara was also a sculptor making mostly effigies, with turtles being her signature design.  The quarry and craft were passed to their sons Billy "Big Eagle" Bryan (1942-2012) and Richard "Whirl Wind" Bryan (1944-2012).  The disk pattern pipe is usually associated with the Mississippian culture.  The owner of this pipe states the pipe was purchased by her husband in 1965 while they vacationed in the Great Lakes area.  She remembers it was purchased after watching a demonstration of pipestone sculpting at the National Monument.  She states the demonstration was by a Native American in tribal attire but is unsure if it was Chief Standing Eagle they watched.  Internet search yielded other examples of Standing Eagle attributed pipes at the Smithsonian, in the collections of Presidents Truman and Eisenhower, as well as a very similar example to this one on display at the National Museum of the American Indian.  The photos shown include George and Winona during living history exhibitions at the monument, one of George at Spotted Quarry and the last photo is the example at the National Museum of the American Indian.  This pipe is in excellent condition as pictured showing only light handling marks.  A couple of defects in the catlinite as pictured, which is normal for this clay stone.  100% money back guarantee of authenticity.  Thanks for looking!    *Please excuse any errors or incorrect terminology on pipes, we know little about them.  The pipes are being sold for a 93 years young lady we helped move into assisted living (her husband passed in the 1990's).  Pipes have been in storage for over 25 years so may need additional cleaning.  Please contact us to correct any errors.  A note on the low # of transactions - I am helping my son who recently completed his stint with the USMC get his ebay account up and running and teaching him what little I know of the steps to selling.  Please take a look at our other account at captjsullivan with over 1290 feedbacks at a 100% rating.  We sell high quality items described and pictured accurately and treat customers the way we wish to be treated.  Shipping is same day whenever possible and rarely over 24 hrs from purchase.  International shipping can be arranged on most items.  Combined shipping discounted on multiple orders.
